TUESDAY TIP: Eco-Friendly Coffee

Jul 19, 2011

Americans enjoy roughly 30 million cups of steaming coffee daily. Aside from recyclable filters and reusable mugs, look out for these eco-friendly terms the next time you purchase your coffee:

  • Shade-Grown – Beans labeled with this term means they’ve been grown on plantations with natural tree canopy above the fields. This is better for the soil and increases animal habitat in that area.
  • Organic – This process doesn’t use harsh chemicals or pesticides to grow the coffee beans. Plantations that use fertilizers and chemicals can harm the environment as well as expose the farmers to cancer.

Coffee beans are one of the largest cash crops in the world, so every dollar spent toward eco-friendly coffee supports environmentally-responsible farming practices. That can make your daily cup of coffee even sweeter!
